Trivia Today: On the morning of April 6th, 1944, Klaus Barbie, a Nazi otherwise known as 'the Butcher of Lyon' orchestrated a raid upon an orphanage in this tiny French village, sending 44 children to their deaths at Auschwitz. (I'm sorry today's trivia is so sad, but it's important.)

Izieu was the site of the Jewish orphanage during World War2. On April 6, 1944, three vehicles pulled up in front of the orphanage. The Gestapo, under the direction of the 'Butcher of Lyon' Klaus Barbie, entered the orphanage and forcibly removed the forty-four children.

"the Butcher of Lyon", captured and deported 44 Jewish children hidden in the village of Izieu, killed.

I know it's sad.

Dear Mr.D.Turner,
I hope you know that I wrote to you before. Well it's true that you will have another person to compete with. As I said before, you probably think that you can have all the power.I think not!!
Be father warned.

In April 1944, Barbie ordered that 44 Jewish children found at an orphanage at Izieu be sent to Drancy transit camp, just outside of Paris, from where they were sent to their deaths at Auschwitz.

LA MAISON D'IZIEU:

Klaus Barbie, head of the Gestapo in Lyons, raided a children's home known as La Maison d'Izieu. Barbie, known as "the Butcher of Lyons", deported 44 Jewish children aged 4 to 13 years and 5 women who were taken directly to Auschwitz and murdered. After the war, Barbie worked for U.S. Army Intelligence, which helped him escape to Bolivia. It was only in 1983 that he was extradited to stand trial. He was convicted in July 1987 and died 4 years later.

yo whats poppin??

The sleepy village of Izieu lay overlooking the Rhone River between Lyon and Chambery in central France. Refugees from Herault were the first arrivals at the Children's home, officially named Settlement for Refugee Children from Herault, and their Jewish identity was kept secret by the staff. The children, aged between 3 and 18, felt safe and secure, supervised by seven adults.

The Children's Home was a perfect idyll and the Jewish children led a happy life with plenty of time for playing, drawing and painting. Often one of the young boys entertained his companions by making movies, paintings on transparent paper and scrolled past a lighted box.

idk if its right so get it poppin.

Klaus Barbie sent children from an orphanage in Izieu.

I don't even understand how you could be so heartless and cruel. It is disgusting. Killing animals is bad enough, how in the world could you actually kill people, especially children, just because they have different beliefs than you. It is just evil.

I don't feel the need to compose anything longer than these 3 or 4 sentences today. Alright, the answer for Venredi's trivia is Izieu, population, 181, between the much more grandiose cites known as Lyon and Chamberry.

Ps. Two of the 44 jewish children were set to Tallin ,Estonia to be shot down by a firing squad.
My Grandmother was born and raised in that city, and fled from the Soviet invasion to emmigrate to the USA.

Auschwitz, located in Oswiecim outside of Cracow, Poland, has become a symbol of the Holocaust. One of the main reasons that Nazi Germany established the camp there was because it was a central intersection of roads and railways. Before the Second World War, Jews living in Oswiecim, who were often artisans or merchants, constituted approximately half of this small town's population. After the Holocaust, it may be argued that Oswiecim will forever be overshadowed by Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest of the Nazi concentration camps and extermination centers.
