Secret Holiday Gals & Guys

Secret Holiday Gal/Guy Guidelines!

  • Minimum of 3 gifts!
  • $ 10 dollar Maximum
  • For every gift, you must leave a clue as to who you (the Secret Santa) is...

-If someone has figured out their Secret Santa , I may surprise that person by having the Santa switch.

-Good gift ideas are: $5 gift cards, candy, little toys, keychains, stuffed animals, lip-gloss, books, perfume samples., laynards, cute flash drives, cute notebooks & folders, picture frames, candles, ANYTHING French related... Other possibilities are footballs, jewelry, and even a 2-liter bottle of  soda!

-Make sure no one forgets to bring a gift. There is nothing worse than a kid not getting a gift while everyone else is showing off theirs :-(

-Don't ruin it! Nothing ruins Secret Santa than knowing your partner or your partner knowing it's you.

- If you forget or can't do it, let me know...I'll help you out :-)

C'est mardi, le quinze novembre (I miss you!)

**I am SO sorry I am not here! I am currently serving JURY DUTY, which is every American's responsibility. It means you have to decide if someone is innocent or guilty when they have been accused of a crime.
I can't wait to see you when I get back. I am officially released on Friday, but I hope to be back before then.

Les Misérables

The movie you are about to watch today is one of my favorite French stories. LES MISÉRABLES (The Miserable Ones), is an American adaptation of French author, Victor Hugo's 1862 novel. It is meant to show the real differences between the rich and the poor or the 'haves' and 'have nots' in 1860's France.

There are a few mature themes in this movie. The desperate character, Fantine, turns to a terrible job in order to support her little girl, Cosette. She is unmarried and Cosette has to be hidden from her job since back then, it was unacceptable to have a child without a father. There is some language used to describe Cosette that is considered inappropriate today, but was used to describe a fatherless child in 1862.

Summary of first part of the film

Les Misérables is a 1998 film adaptation of Victor Hugo's 1862 novel of the same name, directed by Bille August. It stars Liam NeesonGeoffrey Rush,Uma Thurman, and Claire Danes.
As in the original novel, the storyline follows the adult life of Jean Valjean (Liam Neeson), an ex-convict (paroled following 19 years of hard labor, for stealing bread) pursued by police Inspector Javert (Geoffrey Rush).

Jean Valjean (Liam Neeson), a man arrested for stealing bread nineteen years previously, is released on parole. Since no one else is willing to allow a convict to stay the night, Valjean is kindly welcomed by Bishop Myriel to spend the night in his home. Valjean explains to Myriel that he is going to become a new man the following day. However, that night, Valjean steals Myriel's silverware and flees. Valjean is later arrested and brought back to Myriel, but Myriel tells the police that Valjean did not steal his silverware, but that he, in fact, actually gave it to him and also gives him his expensive candlesticks. Myriel then reminds Valjean of his promise that he was to become a new man that day.

Nine years later, Valjean is now a wealthy industrialist and a mayor. He eventually befriends Fantine (Uma Thurman), a single mother-turned-prostitute, after he rescues her when she was nearly arrested by the police officer Javert (Geoffrey Rush), who previously served as a guard at the prison Valjean was held in. Javert starts to become suspicious that the Mayor and Valjean are the same person. Later, Valjean receives word that another man (John McGlynn) is mistaken as being him and is about to be rearrested.

How is Halloween celebrated in France?

Halloween in France is usually celebrated by costumed people of all ages going to parties at friends' homes, restaurants, bars, or clubs. The costumes themselves tend to be traditionally "scary" - mummies, ghosts, goblins, witches, and vampires - rather than the cute costumes like princesses, superheroes, and the cartoon character of the day which are popular in the US. Some recreation centers encourage kids to make their own costumes.

Trick-or-treating is getting to be more common. It started out store-to-store, rather than house-to-house, but the latter is picking up. However, Halloween occurs during the mid-season school break, which slows it down a bit.Stores, malls, restaurants, offices, and homes decorate their windows; pastry and candy shops make up special desserts and candies; and many different kinds of companies use Halloween in their ads. Supermarkets sell pumpkins for jack-o'-lanterns and candy companies are now marketing candy in the traditional Halloween format: one big bag filled with lots of little packages, which may encourage trick-or-treating.

The growing demand for jack-o'-lanterns during Halloween has been a boon for pumpkin growers. There is even a pumpkin patch at a farm outside of Paris where people can pick their own. Halloween in France is rather controversial, due to the perception of corporate and cultural influence, as well as the fact that it is not a typical French holiday and some people still don't understand what is being celebrated. Because Halloween is seen as an American celebration, some French people refuse to enjoy it, having decided to include it in their anti-American boycott. It's too early to tell whether Halloween will develop into a long-term tradition; once the novelty wears off, it may turn out to be just a fad. And yet, interestingly, the French have been celebrating the ideas at the very heart of Halloween (respect for the dead) for centuries. 31 October to 2 November have traditionally been spent, especially by older generations, visiting cemeteries, honoring saints, and attending religious services.

*LOTTO d'Halloween!!
