Trivia: The Eiffel Tower, designed by Gustav Eiffel, was made for a 1889 event and wasn’t all that popular with Parisiens at the time, even though it was then the tallest structure in the world. It was due to be torn in 1909, but it was saved as it made an ideal spot to put TV and radio antennas on top of. What was the event it was originally made for?

the eiffel tower was as part of the world exposition I do believe.
It was originally looked upon as a temporary structure, built for the 1889 Worlds Fair. The Worlds Fair coincided with the centenary of the French Revolution. How was Mr.Scheffel?
A Paris icon, the tower was begun in 1887 and finished for the opening of the Universal Exposition in 1889 to mark the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution.

Heyy Miss B,
1889 World Exhibition
The Eiffel Tower was built for the World Exhibition in 1889, held in celebration of the French Revolution in 1789.
The construction was only meant to last for the duration of the Exposition, but it still stands today, despite all protests from contemporary artists who feared the construction would be the advent of structures without 'individuality' and despite the many people who feared that this huge 'object' would not fit into the architecture of Paris

It was made for the centennial celebration of the French Revolution.
I do believe that the answer is the original world's fair. Most Parisian citizens loathed the tower, but now, it is one of the most iconic buildings in the WORLD.

The eiffel tower was originally built for the entrance arch for the Exposition Universelle, a World's Fair marking the centennial celebration of the French Revolution. Eiffel originally planned to build the tower in Barcelona, for the Universal Exposition of 1888, but those responsible at the Barcelona city hall thought it was a strange and expensive construction, which did not fit into the design of the city.
